How To Become A Top School By Focusing On The “Big Five” Principles of Martial Arts School Management

Similar to the process of teaching martial arts, launching and growing a school simply requires focusing on the correct "technique"

Just like learning martial arts, launching and growing a school simply requires focusing on the correct "technique"

Running a martial arts school successfully is really pretty simple – it’s getting your school off the ground that is the hard part. Even so, the same principles that allow you to manage a school effectively are the very same principles needed to get you through your launch period.

Think it’s complicated? It’s really not… launching and growing your school is really just a matter of staying focused on the “Big Five” areas of martial arts school management.

No matter where you are in the business life-cycle, I recommend that every month you should review your current operations as they relate to each of the “Big Five” management principles, then pick one crucial thing to implement/improve upon in each area, and then repeat this process every month thereafter.

By the way, the “Big Five” areas are:

1. Charge more (I would say “charge enough” but I know most school owners think they are when they actually aren’t)
2. Collect your money on-time and eliminate slow-payments/non-payments
3. Spend less (which we’re focusing on in the Management update this month)
4. Attract more students
5. Keep the students you attract

If you review your operations every month and implement a major improvement or innovation in each of these five areas every single month, within one year you will be one of the top schools in your city.

And, if you haven’t already noticed, each month the lessons and articles I post here pretty much revolve around each of these five areas:

Start-Up = All five areas, but mostly it’s focused on the second, third, and fourth principles of management… always remember, during your start-up phase cash-flow is king;

Management = Encompasses all five principles of martial arts school management;

Marketing = #4, “Attract more students”, but it also includes aspects of principle #3 as well, which is why I try to get you to focus on low-cost/high-impact marketing methods;

Curriculum = Most people think this is just related to principle #5, but it has a lot to do with principle #4 as well, because exciting classes lead to referrals;

Retention = Obviously, this relates directly to principle #5, but it’s also directly related to principle #2, because unhappy clients will eventually stop paying you!

Just read the monthly articles in each of the five areas, and implement the information as you learn new ideas each month… I can almost guarantee you that by doing so, within one year you’ll be in the top 10% of schools.

Doubt that it’s possible? Ask some of the other members in the forums what the results of implementing the strategies and ideas they’ve learned here have been. See for yourself what a difference it’s made for these school owners!
