How to Sell Martial Arts Lessons During the Holidays

Member ads for this month can be from the marketing materials download page.

That’s right… Christmas is nearly upon us. And, just as in years past, it always seems to get here too soon and before we’re prepared for it.

Of course, that’s exactly why we’ve been talking about it on the MASAI site for the last three months in our marketing plans.

By now you should have already planned and promoted your Christmas pro shop sale and started advertising your fitness programs (to take advantage of the New Year’s resolution crowd).

Now that those tasks are done, let’s talk about selling martial arts lessons over the holidays. As you’re already aware, most consumers are focused on buying things for the holidays at this time of year; presents, decorations, food for the family gatherings, gas or plane tickets for family trips, and so forth.

So, in order to sell your programs over the holidays, you have to be thinking in “holiday mode”. The idea is to become a part of that holiday spending spree by making your programs something the consumer would want to purchase as part of their normal holiday spending.

In addition, you need to ease the sting of buying a bit for those folks who have most of their disposable income allotted to the above-mentioned holiday expenditures.

The Holidays are Coming Up, So We’re Advertising… Fitness?

Martial arts consulting ads November 2010

This month's martial arts marketing ads and fliers can be downloaded in the member's area.

There’s a good reason why we’re marketing fitness this month, and why this month’s ad is designed the way it is.

I know, I know – October to December is when everyone eats a lot of turkey and ham, watches a lot of sports on TV, eats a lot of junk food, is caught up with traveling to see relatives and attending parties, goes off their diet…

Hmmm… are you starting to see the wisdom of positioning your school as a fun place for people to get fit NOW before folks pack on those holiday pounds?

That’s right – by advertising fitness now, not only will you enroll some adults in your classes immediately, you’ll also be “priming the pump” for this January when everyone and their cousin is looking for cool, non-boring ways to keep their New Year resolutions to lose weight and get in shape. The Prize is for The Person Who Does Things All the Way

In previous articles I discussed the importance of taking the “marketing base” approach to executing your monthly marketing plan. If we apply Pareto’s principle (the so-called “80/20 Rule”) to our marketing, we can assume that 80% of our results will come from 20% of our effort and activities.

Now, all we have to figure out is where to invest that first 20% of our time, money, and effort.

Fortunately for you, I’ve already done all the trial and error for you. So, you don’t need to waste months on end and thousands of dollars to figure out which marketing methods work best. For the present-day business environment, your highest-ROI (return on investment) marketing activities are: Read the rest of this entry »

Multiple Marketing Methods Spell Lead Generation Success For Smart School Owners

Martial arts marketing plan

A good marketing plan includes numerous sources for generating new leads and business.

I always talk about multiple source lead generation, and I often say I don’t care where a lead comes from. I felt I needed to provide some clarification on this, so I don’t give the impression that you don’t have to track your lead sources.

What I mean is that I’ll take a lead from ANY source – the lead doesn’t know where it came from. (I’m about to get off on a tangent, but bear with me here because this will be highly instructive.)

Why You Need To Cultivate Multiple Lead Sources

Here’s the deal – relying too much on one lead source is a serious mistake.

Here’s why: Read the rest of this entry »

Skip The Middle-Man And Go Directly To Your Local Consumers

door hanger

Can this little piece of paper make the difference between marketing failure and success for your school?

Direct marketing is an area of marketing that can be very successfully used by savvy martial art school owners. But just what exactly is “direct marketing”?

There are two qualifying characteristics that distinguish direct marketing from other forms of marketing:

  1. It is delivered directly to the consumer via mail, email, telemarketing, or other direct means -
  2. It is focused on “call-to-action” marketing; in other words, the marketing piece focuses on getting the consumer to take a specific action immediately -

Direct Marketing For Martial Art Schools

For our purposes, we typically focus on three forms of direct marketing:

  • fliering and door hanger distribution,
  • email,
  • and direct mail marketing.

Fliering houses, distributing door hangers, and direct mail all are pretty much in the same category as far as direct marketing goes.

However, I believe door hangers are the superior method. Here’s why: Read the rest of this entry »

Marketing Plan for the Months of February/March

marketing plan1. Print Ads: If you’re running ads in print publications and they’re working, keep it up. Also, start considering hiring a door-to-door flier company to target area neighborhoods around your school with the fliers from this month.

Or, get your leadership team out on a Saturday morning and make an event out of it… offer a prize for the first team to distribute 100 fliers on doors (send them out by twos, make sure an adult is in each team). Take them all out for an inexpensive meal after.

2. Banner Sign: Put your 3 foot by 8 foot banner sign in front of your school… Read the rest of this entry »

Capitalizing on Seasonal Trends…

This month’s ad is a unique take on the typical after New Year fitness ads you usually see. The idea is to do a seasonal tie-in, while still capitalizing on the public’s current seasonal interest in health and fitness.

We suggest you use in print ads, fliers, take ones, and get it blown up to hang in your front window…

1. Print Ads: Run this month’s ad (the New Year Fitness ads and fliers) where moms and women will see it – the local parenting magazine or in the family section of the local newspaper is a good start. Remember, women make up the bulk of your fitness clients – market to them first and foremost. 2. Fliers: Print up those fliers and distribute them in neighborhoods around your school. 3. Large Front Window Display: Blow up the full-color 8.5 by 11.0 inch flier at Kinko’s, have them mount it on foam board, and stick it in your front window. Read the rest of this entry »

When small business owners think about low-cost martial arts marketing ideas, they usually picture themselves running around a Wal-Mart parking lot placing fliers on cars (actually, sticky notes work better and are faster, but that’s for another article…), or perhaps walking up and down the side of the road in a gorilla suit with a sandwich sign over their shoulders (I actually saw a local martial arts school that did this – and yes, the gorilla was wearing a uniform).

However, as a martial arts instructor, your best low-cost form of advertisement is word-of-mouth. The thing is, sometimes you need to encourage your students to talk about your school. Guest pass programs are one way to do this; another method that has worked quite well for me in the past is to host Bring-A-Buddy nights a couple of times a year – during back-to-school time, in January, and right before school lets out for summer.

Basically, here’s how it works: Read the rest of this entry »

One of the hardest things about starting a new studio is finding ways to market before you are making any profit. It’s a real catch-22; you know you need to market to attract students, but you don’t have much money to spend to do it. So what do you do?

Actually, there are a number of low-cost and moderate-cost methods you can use to attract new students. The first thing I would suggest is to Read the rest of this entry »
