How to Sell Martial Arts Lessons During the Holidays

Member ads for this month can be from the marketing materials download page.
That’s right… Christmas is nearly upon us. And, just as in years past, it always seems to get here too soon and before we’re prepared for it.
Of course, that’s exactly why we’ve been talking about it on the MASAI site for the last three months in our marketing plans.
By now you should have already planned and promoted your Christmas pro shop sale and started advertising your fitness programs (to take advantage of the New Year’s resolution crowd).
Now that those tasks are done, let’s talk about selling martial arts lessons over the holidays. As you’re already aware, most consumers are focused on buying things for the holidays at this time of year; presents, decorations, food for the family gatherings, gas or plane tickets for family trips, and so forth.
So, in order to sell your programs over the holidays, you have to be thinking in “holiday mode”. The idea is to become a part of that holiday spending spree by making your programs something the consumer would want to purchase as part of their normal holiday spending.
In addition, you need to ease the sting of buying a bit for those folks who have most of their disposable income allotted to the above-mentioned holiday expenditures.

A Confused Mind Never Buys…

Handing out unnecessary information just for the sake of doing it can actually hinder the enrollment process by creating confusion in the mind of the prospective student.
Recently, a MASAI member asked me how many sheets of information he should hand out to his new students and prospects.
Apparently he’d been told by an “expert” that he needed to hand out a ton of information to new students, ostensibly to increase the likelihood that his prospects would enroll…
Well, if you’ve been reading my materials for any length of time, you know that I hold a strong dislike for unnecessary complexity in any shape or form in any process – be it in business systems, martial arts technique, or teaching methods.
And, the above situation is no exception. Let me explain why I think overloading new prospects with information is a mistake, and allow me to show you how to make your enrollment process much, much simpler.

There’s a dilemma most martial arts instructors face when they start teaching kids (well, those who are honest and have integrity, anyway). That is, how do you handle belt rank promotions for kids?
Obviously, kids don’t have anywhere near the emotional maturity, logical deduction, motor skills, strength, or learning ability adults have. Granted, kids can do a lot of things many adults can’t (full splits in three weeks, anyone?) but generally speaking they simply cannot perform like adults when it comes to retention of techniques, application of techniques, and performing like an adult black belt.
So how do you handle belt rank promotions for kids without lowering standards or becoming the thing you hate most? Read the rest of this entry »
