How do you keep adults in class? Here are a few ideas...

As hard as it is for some schools to attract adult students, you’d think they’d put more effort into keeping them around.

Even so, adult retention presents a real issue to school owners across the spectrum of styles and markets.

Adults seem to have ten times the distractions of children, and they don’t have parents paying for their lessons who make them go to class twice a week.

Work, family, dating, finishing a degree… these are just a few examples of things that can distract adult students and that may be competing with you for their attention.

So, how do you keep adults attending class?

I don’t have the 110% solution to that issue, but I can offer some helpful suggestions that may help boost your adult retention. Here are a few simple strategies you can use that may help increase your adult enrollment and boost your adult class attendance.

Classes Getting Stale? Here’s How To Shake Your Classes Up And Boost Your Retention…

This is the last thing you want to see when you look out on your training floor...

One of the most damaging things that can happen to your retention is for your classes to get stale and boring. Once students start to feel like they:

  • Aren’t being challenged…
  • Are doing the same things, over and over again…
  • Are spending more time helping newer students than learning new techniques…

They’ll be headed for the door and canceling their memberships when their time is up – I guarantee it.

And, be advised – the holidays are right around the corner, making this a prime time of the year for people to cancel memberships and drop out. For one, they start looking for ways to cut expenses this time of year so they can afford to buy gifts and travel; second, when those credit card bills come due in January, they have even more incentive to cut out luxury expenses.

Remember, it’s your job as an instructor to keep your students motivated and your classes exciting. Keep them happy, and they won’t even consider quitting to save a few bucks.

January and February are great months to enroll adult students, if you capitalize on everyone’s motivation to lose weight and get in shape in the New Year. Teaching plans are something that every instructor should use to help them organize and teach better classes. By planning ahead, you can insure that your classes are more exciting and that you are covering the material your students need to progress.

I feel they are so important that I never let an assistant walk out on the floor without one. In addition, I give my instructors basic guidelines they must follow so I know they are planning their classes properly.
